When I was Captain at ULBC we were always looking for Sponsorship. Applying to a wide range of companies in the hope that one would want to want to sponsor us. Sadly the case was more rejection than acceptance. Many other university societies face similar troubles in finding sponsors to help support the good work they do.

SponsorMySociety.co.uk is our attempt to help societies and businesses to come together in one place. Rather than having to fire off 100 emails to differing companies, we wanted to make it as easy and possible for societies to focus on their good work. Hence why SponsorMySociety is so easy to use. Your listing will contain all the relevant information that a potential sponsor will need!

SponsorMySociety is a great tool to help businesses find the societies that they want to sponsor. The filter system allows your search to be refined to categories and locations that best suit a business. Making it easier than ever before businesses to find suitable societies to sponsor.

We want SponsorMySociety to be a valuable service to both businesses and societies; thats why we believe that for a service such as this it is only fair that we provide it for free.

My computer has been struggling to find the horse power for the last couple of months, but the idea of forking out £1000 for a new one seemed ludicrous. My computer is a mid 2009 13″ MacBook Pro running on 2GB Ram.

How can you improve your computer for £200?

It turns out that it is possible and very simple to do. Firstly my mac was very slow, so to increase its speed I bought 2 4GB Ram from Amazon: Ram memory upgrade 4GB for Apple MacBook Pro 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13-inch DDR3) MB990LL/A Mid-2009 Laptop/Notebook. This has made a significant difference to the speed of my mac, well it can now process 4x the memory per second it could do before. To find out how to remove it simply use iFixit as they provide complete guides for most electronic goods.

Second issue with my mac was that I had run out of space. The initial 13″ MacBook Pro’s only have 160GB of memory. Today’s have 500GB as standard. So I bought a 1TB hard disk again from Amazon: Western Digital Scorpio Blue 2.5 inch 1TB 5400RPM OEM Internal Hard Disk Drive (Compatible with Sony Playstation PS3). Increasing the space nearly 10 times. Now I have space for all those growing program and apps which consume endless GBs, needless to say the amount pictures take up.

To do this follow the guides from iFixit but you may need some tools. I bought a Draper 09550 31 Piece Precision Screwdriver Set which has all the tools to take off the back cover and the internal screws on the hard disk.

If you are feeling hard and risky you can also take out you Optical Drive (CD Drive) and add an additional hardisk there. It might be worth looking into adding a SSD which loads quicker and uses less battery than a standard Hard Disk. I’ve added one and now the load time from booting is 1 minute quicker. I bought a Crucial CT128M4SSD2 128GB M4 SSD and to hold it in a New 2nd Hard Drive/SSD Bay Caddy SATA to SATA for Laptop/Macbook – 9.5mm – Expand Your Data Storage Space!. This is quite expensive and will cost another £200.

I highly recommend improving your computer, as it is also an eyeopening experience. Thanks to Josh for giving me the idea.

Square is my favourite start-up from across the pond that is yet to dock on mainland Europe. Square is a mobile payment service that allows you to receive payments via your phone using a square device with a magnetic strip that plugs into your headphone jack or their app.

Jack Dorsey, one of the founders of Twitter and its current Chairman is the man behind Square. For the last 3 years it has been making the world shake with the revolution in the payment industry. Square is now processing over $4bn a year! Some notable investors include Visa along with Sir Richard Branson.

But there is one issue that I have… That is the lack of international expansion. Square is available to buy in Apple store across the States, making distribution simple across the globe. The opportunity is there to make a huge difference to ordinary lives. Taking a look at the testimonials from Square users, its not the high street chains that are benefiting but the average person. The gardener; the graphic designer; the dog walker; their lives are now transformed because they can take immediate card payment… who uses cash?

At a time when start ups are becoming main stream job prospects in Europe, Square offers everyone the opportunity to start receiving payments. Just think how quickly you can be paid for work, no more waiting for that check in the post or the online bank transfer.

When bought in store you get $10 credit (cost of device in store) as it is normally shipped for free by Square themselves. The great thing is if you don’t have the magnetic strip with you, you just enter the card number and hey presto payment complete. However doing it this way has a larger transaction fee, which are relatively low for the service Square provides.

Yesterday Square launched the Square Register on iPad. Getting rid of the cash register and replacing it with an iPad and an app?! Surreal, yes it is but our lives have been made ever so simple with the technology. This is perfect for coffee shops as shown by the video below.

Personally I can’t wait for Square to come to Europe because sadly there is no European equivalent at this moment.

The highest score on their chosen level would win an Amazon Kindle.

Day 1: Held the highest score for most of the day until a good score. 72,000

My competitive nature from sport took over and I decided I had to win…

Day 2: Last day of Apps World, as I left the QuickBlox stand for a little break. 1st go was pretty poor and no where near the top score. 2nd attempt destroyed the whole field! 97810 anyone who can beat it I will take you out for dinner.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending an event held at Battersea Power Station hosted by BlueVia (a Telefonica company). The event was aimed at bringing startups, developers and investors all under one roof, well there isn’t a roof over the Power Station. The event was filled with a line up of incredible speakers: a guy who made money from skype then lost everything; the guy who made the Helicopter game we have all played to waste time; and the CEO best game to come onto Mobile PAH!

The event was useful in many ways but one thing everyone should take away in entrepreneurs week is….

Stop waiting, get started!

The reason for attending was that we are developing a game that will literally blow your mind away! This event was an opportunity for us to meet people in the industry and how they have done things.

The next big event is Apps World London where the CEO of Angry Birds will be giving a talk along with many others.

The iPhone auction is the first promotional campaign for Baylif. Where we are selling a black iPhone 4S 16GB. It is starting at £700 and ending at £0. But how long will you wait to buy it?

When we were thinking about baylif, we were thinking how we can make shopping exciting and entertaining where hundreds of items are on sale, both new and old, dropping in price every second until someone buys it.

With the iPhone auction we have made one rule, you have to list two items to sell. So you can make some money whilst getting the opportunity to potentially buy the iPhone. But remember there might be someone willing to buy it for more than you are.

This is our first promotional sale and there will be more every month in the future.

For the last month or so I have been reading Churchill’s biography by Roy Jenkins. It is a fascinating book but heavy in depth, so I picked up The Lean Start Up by Eric Ries to take a break from Churchill.

The Lean Start Up is a great book for any business person, whether you are starting, work in a large organisation or are in the midst of problems. This book gives you so many ideas that you can apply in your specific case.

Eric starts the book by discerning some of the difficult experiences he had with his business and what he learnt from their experience. From this I would say the most important part is to split test as much as you can. And I agree with him that split testing is a form of evaluation if an idea works or not. Having this incorporated into the engineering of any product, especially online, is critical, as the metrics that you get are invaluable and can determine your success.

There are many more gems in this book, that I recommend you pick up and read only because you’ll be full of ideas afterwards!

Hopefully Churchill will be next for a review.

It’s been a month since we released the beta version of Baylif.com. For those that don’t know Baylif.com is an auction website where the sellers set a start price that drops to the reserve price over the period of time they have set. It will drop until the buyer decides to buy. Both are happy.

There have been several trades on the site in the last month, membership is growing and the types of products are expanding. But all this isn’t easy and it is only the start of what we want to do.

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting in terms of the ideas we are trying to bring into Baylif. This includes some videos, updated pages to make it easier to understand and one big surprise.

Have a look atBaylif.

I rowed for University of London Boat Club between 2007 – 2010. It is a prestigious club with a long and strong history that contains several Olympic and World gold medalists. Between 2010 – 2011 I conducted a rebrand of their website and online presence to move the club forward.

I have done two versions of the website. Version 1 was live between 2010-2011 as a temporary solution to the old website, before moving to a more stable platform with a CMS behind it.

Below are some screenshots of both versions.
